Local SEO for Service Businesses, Without the Gimmicks

Local search rewards businesses that are unambiguously real, unambiguously nearby and unambiguously reviewed. Most of the work is hygiene, and most competitors skip it, which is why it still works.

Get the business profile right first

For service businesses, the map listing frequently outperforms the website for enquiries, and it is the cheapest thing to fix.

  • One exact business name — no keyword stuffing, which risks suspension.
  • Precise category selection, primary category chosen deliberately.
  • Service areas that match where you genuinely work.
  • Hours that are accurate, including holidays.
  • Real photographs of real work, added regularly rather than once.
  • Every question in the Q&A section answered by you.

Consistency matters more than volume: the same name, address and phone number everywhere they appear, formatted identically.

Location pages that are not duplicates

The standard mistake is generating twenty near-identical pages with the town name swapped. They rank briefly, then stop, and they make the site look thin.

A location page earns its place when it contains genuinely local material: the specific services delivered there, real projects with recognisable context, local pricing or travel notes, response times, and the areas you cover from that base. If you cannot write two hundred words that are true only of that location, do not create the page.

Reviews are a system, not a request

Reviews influence both ranking and the click decision. Asking occasionally produces occasional reviews; a system produces a steady flow.

Trigger the request at the moment of satisfaction — job completed, problem solved — not weeks later. Make the link one tap. Respond to every review, positive and negative, briefly and without defensiveness. A well-handled negative review reassures more readers than a wall of five stars.

Never buy reviews or write them internally. It is detectable, it is removable and it costs the profile that took years to build.

Structured data and the boring technical layer

Mark up the things a local searcher needs: LocalBusiness details, address, geo coordinates, opening hours, service areas and the services themselves. Add FAQPage markup where you genuinely answer questions.

Then check the fundamentals that local visitors feel immediately: the phone number is tappable, the address opens in maps, the page loads fast on mobile data, and the enquiry form works on a small screen.

Citations, briefly

Directory listings are no longer a growth strategy, but inconsistency across them is still a drag. Fix the handful that matter — the major directories and the credible industry bodies in your sector — and ignore the long tail of low-quality sites entirely.

Content that matches local intent

Local searchers ask practical questions: how much does this cost here, how quickly can you come, do you cover this area, what does the process involve. Answer those in plain language, with real numbers where you can.

That content does double duty. It ranks for the long-tail searches your competitors ignore, and it pre-qualifies the people who call.
